Tourism in Sopron

Sopron, a romantic border town lies to the south-west of Lake Fertő which is and ideal place for relaxation and sightseeing. It is one of the richest Hungarian cities in terms of culture, blessed with a multitude of historic buildings dating back to Barroque and New Gothic times and lying in a marvellous landscape.

Sopron is situated near the western borders of Hungary, at the foot of the Alps, 60 km from Vienna and 220 km from Budapest. It is one of the oldest jewelboxes of the country. Sopron merges past and present in itself. It creates a bridge between Hungary and its western neighbours, opening a gate for foreign guests visiting Hungary, as it is symbolized by the coat of arms of the city.

In the medieval city center, called Várkerület, where renovated historical buildings, the town’s symbol, the Firewatch Tower with the „Gate of faith” and intimate streets can be found. The inhabitants of the city are famed for their hospitality and loyalty to their hometown. This is also symbolized by the 'Gate of Faith', which can be found on the southern side of the Firewatch Tower, the symbol of Sopron, and which was made in memory of the referendum of 1921.
 
Sopron is a significant wine producing region, one of the few in Hungary to make both red and white wines. Grapes include Kékfrankos for red wine and Traminer (Gewürztraminer) for white wine. In climate it is similar to the neighbouring Burgenland wine region in Austria, and several winemakers make wine in both countries. Blue Frankish, Tramini, and Green Veltelini are well-known Sopron wines. Sopron's Blue Frankish and Pinot Noir wines are particularly prized.
